Digital library of mental health literacy curricula material for educators
Chad's Legacy Project is a Seattle-based non-profit dedicated to the advancement of mental health education in schools. With the support of the University of Washington SMART Center, they developed Mental Health Instruction — a beta website to share programs and curricula for teachers. The programs and curricula were researched, tested, and analyzed for quality by the SMART Center based on criteria borrowed from the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. In order to continue this important work and add more curricula for other Mental Health Literacy categories, the non-profit was seeking to redesign Mental Health Instruction to attract donors and improve the user experience for teachers.

Visual Direction
Before diving into full-page designs, I created style tiles to establish possible directions for the site’s visual look and feel. I wanted to reflect MHI’s pioneering nature to engage its audience while remaining practical, inviting, and accessible to help support its mission of becoming a national resource for schools. Bright colors break up dense copy and create an engaging experience, while typography and UI elements maintain clarity and ease of use.

Applying a Visual Style to a Flexible System
With the visual direction established, I developed a flexible design system that ensured consistency while allowing for adaptability. Clear guidelines for type hierarchy maintained legibility across screen sizes, while custom components provided both functionality and brand alignment. To enhance accessibility, I refined contrast levels to meet WCAG standards. This system served as the foundation for designing high-fidelity page mockups, ensuring a cohesive experience as layouts evolved and new content was added.

Supporting MHI's Mission
MHI strives to provide high-quality resources to implement mental health education in schools. It does this by identifying curricula and presentations that align with one of four pillars that form mental health education as a whole: Mental Health Literacy, Social and Emotional Learning, Suicide Prevention, and Substance Misuse Awareness.
Consulting UW's SMART Center
MHI’s library is built on a rigorous selection process to ensure programs provide meaningful resources for educators. Each program within the Mental Health Literacy category is evaluated against Washington State’s OSPI criteria for mental health literacy and expertly vetted by UW’s SMART Center to maintain high standards.
Milestones within Reach
MHI has outlined a multi-phase project to propelling itself as a national resource for schools. The first phase focused on addressing the most immediate need by identifying the Mental Health Literacy category and adding relevant programs. Now, MHI is working to broaden its library to cover the full spectrum of mental health education.

Library of Programs
MHI’s library is designed to help schools find programs that align with their educational standards. Currently, programs are available in the Mental Health Literacy category, with additional categories planned as the library expands. As new programs are added, each will be carefully curated to meet the same high standards, ensuring a comprehensive and reliable resource for educators.

Matching Programs to Class Needs
To help educators discover programs meeting their own class needs, brief overviews including components and relevant learning standards can be compared.

Program Details
Each program in the library is supported by peer-reviewed research and qualifying education standards, giving teachers confidence in its alignment with mental health education guidelines.
